Dr. Michael Newton will discuss "Gaelic Voices of Exile: The History and Literature of Gaels in America."

Michael Newton was awarded a Ph.D. in Celtic Studies from the University of Edinburgh in 1998 for his dissertation The Tree in Scottish Gaelic Literature and Tradition. He has given lectures and taught workshops on Scottish topics at venues such as the Smithsonian, the U.S. Library of Congress, Slighe nan Gaidheal in Seattle, and the Toronto Scottish Gaelic Learners' Association.

Three eminent Gaelic poets -- Aonghas Dubh MacNiceall, Christopher Whyte and Kevin Macneill -- will read a selection of poems from The Great Book and selections of their own
work.

This is a great opportunity to experience 1,500 years of traditional and contemporary poetry in one of the oldest languages in Europe. The readings will be bi-lingual - in the original Gaelic with English translations. Refreshments will be available.

Join us for an evening of poetry and music about Lower Manhattan with the Knickerbocker Chamber Orchestra and students from local schools P.S. 89 and I.S. 289 celebrating the culmination of a breakthrough neighborhood arts-education partnership funded by Goldman Sachs.

Opening on Saturday, June 30, 2012, this year’s Showcase will be on view throughout the month of July and will include all of the year's new poetry and poetry-related books, chapbooks and multimedia titles published in the United States. More than 2,100 titles were in last year’s exhibition, representing close to 650 U.S. publishers—commercial, university, independent, small and micro-presses.
