Through breath-work (pranayama), meditation (dhyana), body-motion (asana), participants will simultaneously activate and calm their bodies (which include our minds!) at the start of each class. The body will be put to work, rather than pushed aside. Poetry in Motion recognizes the body as an integral part of the creative process, something to work with, not in spite of. In-class writing exercises (appropriate combo) include writing via meditation, writing in particular postures, writing while moving. It’s a hands-on class—literally—utilizing the tactile. The combined exercises will steer participants toward poetic invention, granting the discovery of how completely related the mind & breath & body are.

Priscilla Becker’s first book of poems, Internal West, won The Paris Review book prize. Her second collection, Stories That Listen, was released from Four Way Books. Her poems have appeared in the following literary journals, among several others: Fence, Open City, Boston Review, The Paris Review, American Poetry Review, The Brooklyn Rail, Verse, Dossier, Aufgabe, and The Swallow Anthology of New American Poets; she recently won the Folio poetry prize; her fiction was materialized in The Literary Review, winner of The Charles Angoff prize. Her collection of essays: Morbid Dyslexia was selected as the finalist in the GrayWolf Press nonfiction contest, then published in The Literary Review; her music reviews have been published in The Nation and Filter magazine; her essays in Cabinet magazine and Open City. Her non-fiction has been anthologized by Soft Skull Press, Anchor Books, and Sarabande.
