Open House with Peter Covino and Patricia Spears Jones

Peter Covino—poet, translator, and one of the founding editors of Barrow Street Press—reads work in English and Italian, and talks craft with host Patricia Spears Jones.   

Poet, translator, and editor Peter Covino is currently an associate professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Rhode Island, after a fourteen-year career as a professional social worker in the fields of foster care and AIDS services in New York City. He is the author of the poetry collections, The Right Place to Jump; and Cut Off the Ears of Winter. His prizes include a National Endowment for the Arts Translation Fellowship; the PEN American/Osterweil Award; the Paterson Poetry Prize; and the Frank O’Hara Prize for his chapbook Straight Boyfriend.

Peter’s scholarly work on contemporary poetics, queer culture, and ethnic literature appears in his coedited essay collection on Italian American Literature, and in critical essays in many books and journals. Recent residencies and grants include a fellowship from Richmond American International University of London – Rome Programme, and the American Academy in Rome. His poems are widely published in America and Italy.
