On View: November 16, 2017-May 12, 2018
In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Poets House, 30 Years! A Narrative in 30 Objects mines the Poets House archives for objects of resonance, including handwritten correspondence between E. E. Cummings and Elizabeth Kray; typescripts from Stanley Kunitz and Galway Kinnell; paintings, photographs, journals, and recordings; and much more. The exhibition charts the evolution of this vibrant home for poetry, from a borrowed high school classroom to a small loft space in SoHo to its permanent 11,000-square-foot Lower Manhattan home. Drawn from the Poets House collection and archives of its founders, items in the exhibition include poetry-inscribed paintings by Philip Guston; photos of poets (including Beat writers Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs); correspondence from U.S. Poet Laureates Billy Collins and Philip Levine; Stanley Kunitz’s dinner-party journal with sketches of seating charts for such guests as Mark Rothko, Robert Lowell, and Lee Krasner; and paintings by E.E. Cummings, whose touring career was launched by Poets House co-founder Elizabeth Kray
