An Afternoon with Bernadette Mayer

Gather to celebrate the endless capacity and singular brilliance of Bernadette Mayer. She is the author of more than twenty collections of poetry including Poetry State Forest (2008) and Sonnets (1989), which was recently reprinted to mark its twenty-fifth anniversary. This reading will feature special introductions by Michael Ruby and Sam Truitt, co-editors of Eating the Colors of a Lineup of Words: The Collected Early Books of Bernadette Mayer (2015). Follow Mayer’s example and “turn formally to love to spend the day.”

Bernadette Mayer is an avant-garde poet, artist, curator, and editor. A fixture of New York’s literary scene in the 1907’s and 1980’s, her experiments with form, constraint, genre, and collaboration have shaped several generations of poets, and her genre-bending workshops at the Poetry Project remain legendary. The recipient of a 2015 Guggenheim Fellowship, she is the author of more than twenty volumes of poetry and prose. Her most recent volumes are Eating the Colors of a Lineup of Words: The Early Books of Bernadette Mayer (2015), and Works and Days (forthcoming).
