Alison Hawthorne Deming

Poet and essayist Alison Hawthorne Deming, whose newest book is Zoologies: On Animals and the Human Spirit, discusses writing in the era of climate change – how we must join the sensual texture and discernment of poetry with the critical content of scientific writing to fully elucidate a rapidly changing world.

Alison Hawthorne Deming is Agnese Nelms Haury Professor of Environment and Social Justice in the Creative Writing Program at the University of Arizona. Her poetry collections include Rope (2009), Genius Loci (2005), and Science and Other Poems (1995), winner of the Walt Whitman Award. Her most recent nonfiction book, Zoologies: On Animals and the Human Spirit (2014) uses metaphor and history to portray the dynamic relationships between human and other animal species. She lives in Tucson and Grand Manan, New Brunswick, Canada.
