In Practicalities, describing the practice of writing, Marguerite Duras writes, “It’s a matter of deciphering something already there, something you’ve already done in the sleep of your life…” This might also be called dream—and the work necessary to bring the writing about, akin to what Freud called “dream work.” In this workshop we’ll discuss these concepts while keeping our eye on the poem in its pre-poem state, examining work by authors such as Duras, Marni Ludwig, Frank Stanford, and others.

Cynthia Cruz is the author of five collections of poetry, including 2018’s Dregs. Her sixth, Guidebooks for the Dead, is forthcoming in 2020. She teaches at Sarah Lawrence College and in the MFA Writing Program at Columbia University.

This workshop is offered via Zoom, a free video conferencing app. Workshop registration includes free Zoom tutorial.
