PASSED FIRST CLASS DATE
The thumbprint of visual art is discernible in so much of modern and contemporary poetry. Wittingly (or, unwittingly), poets evoke the visual arts in different ways to inform their work. Visual art can instruct poets about the creative process, extending metaphors for themes that may be personal, social or political. In this workshop participants’ poems will be considered from the perspective of their relationship to painting, sculpture, architecture and photography. During the course, participants will compose a short manuscript of poems.
Bhisham Bherwani is the author of the poetry collection The Second Night of the Spirit and editor of an anthology of modern and contemporary poetry in English (including translations) from India (Atlanta Review, 2012). He has been the recipient of fellowships from The Frost Place, the Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, Ucross Foundation, and the Jentel Artist Residency Program. A graduate of Cornell University and New York University, he teaches at Borough of Manhattan Community College.
