Through close readings of contemporary poems, students will fill their notebooks with new work culminating in a ten-poem chapbook. The class will evaluate what makes poems successful and borrow those strategies to improve each participant’s work. We will also devote time to publication strategies and how to most effectively send poems to magazines, journals and contests.
Rachel M. Simon is the author of the poetry collection Theory of Orange, winner of the Transcontinental Prize, and the chapbook Marginal Road. She teaches writing, gender studies, and film courses at SUNY Purchase College, Pace University and Bedford Hills Correctional Facility.
