Spend an afternoon discovering the poetries of the world with two back-to-back readings by major writers from Mexico, Iraq, South Africa, the Basque Country, Denmark and Portugal—all against the backdrop of the Poets House Showcase, an exhibit of over 2,000 books of poetry published this year in the United States.

Homero Aridjis, the author of Blue Spaces and Exaltation of Light, is one of Mexico’s foremost poets, novelists and environmental activists. Basque poet Kirmen Uribe is the author of the recently published collection, Bitartean heldu eskutik, which was translated into English by Elizabeth Macklin under the title Meanwhile Take My Hand. Nabeel Yasin, one of Iraq’s most celebrated poets, is best known for the epic poem Brother Yasin.

A native of South Africa, Breyten Breytenbach is a distinguished painter, activist and the author of more than 30 books of poetry and works of prose. José Luís Peixoto, born in Portugal, has written plays, fiction, and poetry, including Child in Ruins and The House, the Darkness. The acclaimed Danish poet Pia Tafdrup is the author of The Whales in Paris, The Crystal Forest, and Queen’s Gate, among others. Iraqi-native Saadi Youssef has published more than 30 volumes of poetry and has rendered into Arabic major works by such writers as Whitman, Cavafy, Lorca, Orwell and Soyinka. His first major collection in English translation is Without an Alphabet, Without a Face.
