This reading features three poets launching their new collections: Carmen Bugan with
Richard Deming’s first collection of poems, Let’s Not Call It Consequence, won the Norma Farber Award from the Poetry Society of America and was a finalist for the Connecticut Book Award. He is also the author of Listening on All Sides: Towards an Emersonian Ethics of Reading. In 2012, he was awarded the Berlin Prize by the American Academy in Berlin. He is currently Director of Creative Writing at Yale University.
Carmen Bugan is the author of Crossing the Carpathians, Burying the Typewriter: Childhood Under the Eye of the Secret Police, Seamus Heaney and East European Poetry in Translation: Poetics of Exile, ¬ The House of Straw and Releasing the Porcelain Birds. Her work has received international praise and has been translated into several languages, including Italian, Swedish, and Polish. She was a Creative Arts Fellow in Literature at Wolfson College, Oxford University, a Hawthornden Fellow, and appears at book fairs and literary festivals worldwide. Carmen obtained her doctorate in English literature from Balliol College, Oxford University. She now lives on Long Island, NY, with her husband and their two children.
Mary Austin Speaker is a poet and book designer. The author of Ceremony, which was selected by Matthea Harvey as winner of the 2013 Slope Editions poetry prize, she has also published four chapbooks, including The Bridge (Push Press 2011) and 20 Love Poems for 10 Months (Ugly Duckling Presse 2012) and a collaborative play, I Am You This Morning You Are Me Tonight, written with her husband, the poet Chris Martin. She lives in Minneapolis.
