This workshop explores the multiple ways of building a book. The focus will be on identifying the organizing principles of each manuscript, the visionary priorities shaping it arrangement. We will gain further insight into own own work, by having the opportunity to articulate, dialogue about, and receive feedback on our projects; and gather practical diagnostic tools for surfacing their underlying structures, through a series of activities designed to make visible the aesthetic, narrative, and architectural arcs and spines of our books. We will examine alternative models for ordering a text, in particular those employed by Indigenous, womanist, multiracial, and queer writers of color; and utilize a set of writing prompts to flesh the bones, presence any seeming absences. This workshop welcomes those working on first and subsequent books, solo and co-authored collections, and edited journal issues and anthologies—be they poetry, sequenced prose (including flash non/fiction), mixed-genre, artists’ books, and/or multimedia projects.
Ahimsa Timoteo Bodhrán is the author of two forthcoming collections, Antes y después del Bronx: Lenapehoking (New American Press) and South Bronx Breathing Lessons (Palabrera Press); and editor of the Fall 2010 international queer Indigenous issue of Yellow Medicine Review: A Journal of Indigenous Literature, Art, and Thought.
