Regardless of stylistic differences, Bashō, John Keats, Pablo Neruda, Li Po, William Carlos Williams, Emily Dickinson, and Kay Ryan would all agree on the essential importance of imagery–the poem’s power of conveying what the real world looks and feels like as a way of both renewing our experience of the world and getting at the otherwise unsayable. Beginning with the premise that concrete imagery is the force that allows thought and emotion to “strike like lightning” in a poem, students will work on honing the precision and power of concrete images in their own poems through numerous writing exercises and the reading of a range of poets from 9th century China to 21st century America.
Geoffrey Nutter has published four books of poems: A Summer Evening (winner of the Colorado Prize), Water’s Leaves & Other Poems (winner of the 2005 Verse Press Prize), Christopher Sunset (winner of the 2011 Sheila Motton Book Award) and most recently The Rose of January. He has taught at The New School, The University of Iowa, New York University, and has published poems in many journals and anthologies.
