Event Navigation

In this generative writing workshop, students will explore the possibilities of poetry as play. We will read a wide range of contemporary poetry and work on developing figurative language and imagery. During each session students will write 3 or 4 poems, which they can develop and polish later. Topics we will explore include: odes, dream poems, self-portraits, centos, persona poems and poems of place. At the end of the session, we will publish an anthology and have a reading at Poets House.
Joanna Fuhrman is the author of five books of poetry, most recently The Year of Yellow Butterflies (2015) and Pageant (2009). She teaches poetry writing at Rutgers University, Sarah Lawrence’s Writers Village, and works with Teachers & Writers Collaborative to develop programs where middle school students write poetry at the Metropolitan Museum.
