Re-visioning Home with Wendy S. Walters

May 21, 2016 | 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Wendy S. Walters

In this class we will practice engaging with architecture and social spaces that comprise our idea of home through a series of interrelated exercises. We will focus on various concepts of residence—and what kind of living takes place in them. While one definition of home includes space for the body, another definition might indicate space for the mind. How we reveal our intimate understanding of place is always a risk, because in showing others the shape of where we feel most welcome, we are also inviting them in. Our workshop discussions will focus on developing techniques for creating new, organic poetic forms and consider strategies for representing the material, metaphorical and spiritual manifestations of our real or imagined home(s) with feeling and distinction.

Wendy S. Walters is the author of Multiply/Divide, Troy, Michigan, Longer I Wait, More You Love Me, and a chapbook, Birds of Los Angeles. She is a founder of The First Person Plural Reading Series in Harlem, a Contributing Editor at The Iowa Review, and Associate Professor of creative writing and literature at the Eugene Lang College of The New School University in the city of New York.
