Jean Valentine, co-translator of Dark Elderberry Branch: Poems of Marina Tsvetaeva, and poet and editor Christian Wiman, translator of Stolen Air: Selected Poems of Osip Mandelstam, discuss the lives of these two pillars of 20th-century Russian poetry and read their work.
Poet Ilya Kaminsky, co-translator of Dark Elderberry Branch: Poems of Marina Tsvetaeva, is unable to attend this program as previously advertised.
Jean Valentine, co-translator of Dark Elderberry Branch: Poems of Marina Tsvetaeva, is the author of eleven books of poetry including, Break the Glass (2010), Door in the Mountain: New and Collected Poems 1965 – 2003 (2004), which won the National Book Award for Poetry, and Dream Barker (1965), which won the Yale Younger Poets Award. She was State Poet of New York from 2008 – 2010.
Christian Wiman, translator of Stolen Air: Selected Poems of Osip Mandelstam, is the author of Every Riven Thing (2011), Hard Night (2005), and The Long Home (1998), which won the Nicholas Roerich Prize. He is also the author of the prose collection Ambition and Survival: Becoming a Poet (2007). He is the editor of Poetry magazine and lives in Chicago.
