Emily Dickinson writes that poetry makes her feel as if the top of her head were taken off. How do we enact transformation and instill surprise in our writing? To get in touch with the vatic voice, we will experiment with automatic writing, listening to music, and ekphrasis. We will read Christopher Smart, Lucie Brock-Broido, Natalie Diaz, Harmony Holiday, Takashi Hiraide, Nathaniel Mackey, and other sorcerers for inspiration. We will both workshop student poems and conjure new ones.
Desirée Alvarez is a painter, poet, and teacher at CUNY and The Julliard School. Her work has received three Artist Fellowships from New York Foundation for the Arts and a European Capital of Culture Award. Her second book, Raft of Flame, is forthcoming in 2020.
This workshop is offered via Zoom, a free video conferencing app. Workshop registration includes free Zoom tutorial.
