The Five Powers of Poetry Seminar

A seminar for teachers with Tony Hoagland

Oct 18, 2013 | 5:00 pm - Oct 20, 2013 | 5:00 pm

Tony Hoagland

Friday, October 18, 5:00-7:30pm
Saturday, October 19, 10:00am-5:00pm
Sunday, October 20, 10:00am-5:00pm

Join us for this intensive seminar for teachers at the high school and community college levels. Through the three-day Five Powers of Poetry seminar, teachers will acquire the understanding, vocabulary, practical skills, and materials to teach contemporary poetry in a beginning or intermediate classroom. The seminar will focus on what poet Tony Hoagland has called “the five powers of poetry”: image, diction, voice, structure, and implication. Through lecture, discussion, and practice, both experienced and novice poetry teachers will learn to elicit and develop specific poetry-writing and reading skills, their own and those of their students. Participants will study the work of a variety of poets—from Anna Akhmatova to John Keats, Frank O’Hara to August Kleinzahler.

Upon completion of the seminar, teachers will be able to talk about poetry with expertise and precision as well as conduct deep and wide-ranging discussions of poems. In addition, participants will expand their repertoire of poems and poets, ultimately gaining a firm footing for reading and teaching poetry.

Tony Hoagland has taught poetry to undergraduates and graduate students and in community workshops for many years. He has published four collections of poems and has been awarded the Jackson Poetry Prize, the O.B. Hardison Award for teaching, the James Laughlin Award, the Brittingham Prize, and the Mark Twain Poetry Award for humor in American poetry, as well as fellowships from the NEA and the Guggenheim Foundation. In 2008 Graywolf Press published a book of Hoagland’s craft essays entitled Real Sofistakashun. He currently teaches in the writing program at the University of Houston and in the Warren Wilson MFA program.
