Writers from Petrarch to Millay, from Shakespeare to Frost to Hacker have written sonnets about love, loss, philosophy, sex, war, aging, and every other human concern. This is a workshop for anyone who wants to learn about, or refresh his or her knowledge of, one of the most enduring and flexible poetic forms. The class will cover the essentials of meter and rhyme, and read and discuss sonnets from their inception up through present-day practice and experimentation. Participants will emerge with a deeper understanding of the sonnet – not only learning how to write sonnets, but how to revise and polish them. Whether put off by the challenge of formal poetry, wanting to brush up sonnet skills, or simply seeking to produce some new work, students will find this a lively, inspiring way to create their own “little songs.”
Kim Addonizio is the author of five poetry collections, most recently Lucifer at the Starlite. She has two books on writing poetry: Ordinary Genius: A Guide for the Poet Within and The Poet’s Companion: A Guide to the Pleasures of Writing Poetry (with Dorianne Laux). Her work has been honored with a Guggenheim Fellowship, two NEA Fellowships, and many other awards. She has taught in MFA programs and at conferences around the United States.
