On View Friday, June 12 – Friday, July 25
In celebration of twenty years of Poets House’s Poetry Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge, this exhibition features a powerful array of poets writing from and about New York City. The show includes one of the earliest copies on record of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, signed by the owner in the month of publication 160 years ago this July; and the true first edition of Hart Crane’s The Bridge, with the first published photos by Walker Evans. Also included are rare works by Langston Hughes, Elizabeth Bishop, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and Marianne Moore, as well as members of the New York School of Poets. Curated by Kevin Young.
All works are taken from the Raymond Danowski Poetry Library, a “living library” of 75,000 volumes of rare and modern poetry that seeks to be the poetry library of record for the twentieth-century. Previous collaborations between Poets House and the Danowski include “come celebrate with me:” The Work of Lucille Clifton, and Winter Wedding: Holiday Cards by Poets.
Sponsored by Poets House and the Raymond Danowski Poetry Library at Emory University
