Event Navigation

On View Friday, June 12 – Saturday, September 19
The Brooklyn Museum Library presents an installation of artists’ books, inspired by Walt Whitman to commemorate Poets House’s 20th annual Poetry Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge. Whitman, that peripatetic poet and New York native, celebrated both the “tall masts of Manhatta” and the “beautiful hills of Brooklyn,” prefiguring the stone and iron that links these two boroughs today. The works selected reinterpret Walt Whitman’s visionary poetics through craftsmanship and the physical space of the book, reminding the viewer that history and literature are never disconnected from their materials.
Sponsored by Poets House and The Brooklyn Museum Library, Walt Whitman & the Art of the Book: Contemporary Visions is curated by Deirdre Lawrence, Principal Librarian at the Brooklyn Museum.
